Chapter Fifteen

When Nova awoke, it was to an urgent knocking at the door. She got up and quickly opened it, only to be swallowed up in someone’s embrace. “Oh my god!” Aria shrieked. “I heard about everything that happened! Are you okay?” She pulled away from the embrace to take a quick look at Nova.

“I’m fine, Aria,” she said, still groggy from sleep. “Where’s Brona?”

“Everyone is pretty busy after today. I’m on babysitting duty now!” The petite brunette smiled, a twinkle in her cobalt eyes. “I’m here to take care of you! Which means of course”—she turned to pick up several brown bags—“I brought takeout and wine!” Aria looked Nova up and down once more. “You look like you could use a drink.” Nova’s stomach growled loudly at the mention of takeout. Aria didn’t miss it. “Do you even eat when I’m not around? Or do you spend all your time hooking up with Darren? I don’t care if he puts it in your mouth, that is not food!”

Nova burst out laughing. “You are so inappropriate. Nobody’s putting anything in my mouth but I am starving so get in here.” She pulled the lycan into the living room and plopped down on the couch. They tore into the savory food like animals and honestly, Nova couldn’t care less. She didn’t even speak again until she’d finished four spring rolls, a spicy crab roll, several steamed gyoza, and a container of steak fried rice.

“Mmmm,” she moaned. “This really is the best.”

Aria grinned. “I know right? Okay it’s wine time now.” She grabbed two wineglasses and filled each nearly to the top. “Drink up, you magical bitch, and then spill all the juicy details.”

Nova downed the first two glasses before giving Aria the details of the attack at Peyton’s apartment complex.

Aria’s eyes were wide. “Holy shit. Fucking zombie mages are so fucking annoying. How the hell did they even find you?”

Nova shook her head. “I don’t know. Romani showed up in Peyton’s room, but they attacked before he could explain—” Nova gasped suddenly. “Peyton! Romani! Lance! How are they? I completely forgot.”

“Calm down,” Aria said as she refilled Nova’s glass. “They are all fine. Lance and Peyton are almost completely healed up. It seems the Collectors leave wounds that take slightly longer to heal from. Romani is going to be fine too, but he needs extra time to recover. He’s not a lycan.”

Nova shuddered as she thought about the bloodied bodies of her new friends. Guilt overwhelmed her.

“Don’t worry. The rest of the group are with them, and they are having a meeting to figure out how to stop this from happening again. Gideon already sent a cleanup team to the complex to make sure everything is back to normal. And yes,” Aria added with an eyeroll. “Darren is with them.” Nova opened her mouth to protest but Aria cut her off. “I know that’s what you were wondering, don’t bother denying it.” Nova closed her mouth and sighed. “Everyone knows about you two, by the way.
